- Ladakh Gets a Facelift Ahead of G-20 Meeting
The Union Territory of Ladakh is preparing to host the G-20 meeting later this year, with a new look and a host of improvements. India assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2022, from Indonesia, and a preparatory meeting was held at the Civil Secretariat, Leh to discuss the arrangements.
Advisor Ladakh, Umang Narula, who presided over the meeting, stressed the importance of incorporating local Ladakhi culture and traditions into the preparation for the G-20 meeting. He also emphasized the need for adequate security arrangements and instructed officials to earmark necessary medical facilities to deal with emergencies at all locations.
Divisional Commissioner and G-20 Nodal Officer in Ladakh, Saugat Biswas, updated the meeting on the preparations for the G-20 delegation. Upon their arrival at Kushok Bakula Rinpoche airport at Leh, the delegates will be greeted with traditional folk songs and dances. The city will receive a facelift, including improved road infrastructure and beautified footpaths, art installations on walls, banners, flags, and posters at important locations, public places, and tourist spots. Signages will be refurbished, Leh Bazar will be beautified, public art and sculptures will be installed, and iconic buildings will be illuminated. The horticulture department will use flower pots and planters to decorate the city. E-buses equipped with Wi-Fi will be deployed for the delegates’ convenience. The Industries and Commerce Department will set up village haats to market local products, and women-led developmental initiatives will be showcased at various venues.
The School Education department will hold essay competitions and lectures as part of the people’s participation in the G-20 event.
The G20 is an intergovernmental forum comprising the world’s major developed and developing economies, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union.
The meeting was attended by Administrative Secretaries, DIG Ladakh, Deputy Commissioner Leh, SSP Leh, heads of departments, and officials from concerned departments.
