Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) decided to extend a pen-down strike for three days more to seek justice for death of Associate Professor Chander Shekhar Chandra. Education is definitely on a back-burner as teachers are on strike. Teachers have raised their voices against Committee Against Sexual Harassment (CASH)Â while concluding its inquiry in haste against Prof. Chandra.
In a special General Body meeting of JUTA it was decided to extend the strike. JUTA number of times demanded Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and removal of all those responsible for procedural lapses that led to the death of Dr Chandra Shekhar. JUTA repeatedly demanded that thorough investigation is the need of the hour and look into the matter that lead to this tragedy.
Enraged over JUTA allegation that procedural lapses by JU administration and CASH led to suicide by Dr Chandra, Prof Alka Sharma announced her resignation as Chairperson of CASH as well as primary membership of the Teachers Association and accused that JUTA is playing politics over the matter.
It is pertinent to mention that Dr Chandra Shekhar ended his life by hanging himself in the Psychology Department on September 7, soon after his suspension over charges of sexual harassment against him by a JU scholar.
