Srinagar: Division of Fish Genetics and Biotechnology (FGB), Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST- K organized a one day brainstorming workshop on “Rainbow trout culture in India: Intervention through genetic and biotechnological approaches to enhance aquaculture production”.
The main aim of the workshop was to bring Farmers, Scientists and Technocrats on one platform to identify impediments in Trout Culture. The workshop was organized under the banner of PMSSY funded project to the Faculty of Fisheries. Director Research SKUAST-K Dr. Sarfaraz A. Wani was the Chief guest and Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary, Inland Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. Of India was the guest of honor on the occasion. Director Research, SKUAST-K highlighted the various issues of aquaculture especially Trout culture and said that the fisheries sector has been one of the sustainable sectors of Agriculture in India. He congratulated the organizers and stressed to conduct such programmes in future also for the benefit of farmers and students. Director Research formed a panel of scientists from the Faculty of Fisheries to prepare a DPR to help the cooperative fisheries society of Srinagar in preparing a proposal to get funds under the central schemes.
Director Research envisaged the vision of Prof. Nazir A Ganie, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-K to alleviate the sufferings of farmers. Sagar Mehra highlighted various schemes of PMSSY, GoI specific to fisheries sector and stressed upon the farmers and students to get benefit from the central schemes.
The Secretary was overwhelmed by the enthusiastic farmers and students who posed various questions and queries and were satisfied by the solutions offered by the experts. Dean, Faculty of Fisheries, Dr. Farooz A. Bhat on the occasion discussed the various genetic interventions needed for the Trout production in order to have high survival rate and fast growth.
Dr. Mohd Ashraf, Organizing Secretary highlighted the technical sessions of the workshop. The programme was attended by HoD’s, scientist, scholars, students, farmers, fishers and representatives of fish cooperative organization. The programme ended with various suggestions and conclusions with the aim to uplift the fishers of Valley. Dr. Irfan Ahmad, Head Division of FGB, FoFy offered vote of thanks..
