Srinagar: Eight people were killed when a vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident in Marwah area of Kishtwar on Wednesday.

Official sources told that at about 1800 hours, a private cab (Tata Sumo) skidded off the road and fell into gorge on Alasyar road near Tatapani Marwah in the mountainous district.

Immediately a rescue operation was launched by locals and police party, they said. Eight people including four women and as many men died on the spot, they said.

Seven of the deceased have been identified Mohammad Amin Sheikh of Chunjor March, Umer Gani Shah (driver) of Nowapachi Marwah, Mohammad Irfan Hajam of Qaderna Marwah, Afaq Ahmad Hajam of Thachna Marwah, Safoora Bano of Anjer Marwah, Muzamilla Banoo and Asia Banoo, both residents of Yardoo Marwah.

SSP Kishtwar Shafqat Hussain Batt confirmed to the eight casualties in the accident and said that a case has been registered. “Investigations are underway,” he added.

Helicopter service to Vaishno Devi shrine suspended

Jammu: In Jammu, rain coupled with foggy weather conditions disrupted helicopter service to the holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi in the Trikuta hills of Reasi district on Wednesday, officials said.

“Due to intermittent rains and foggy weather conditions, helicopter service for Vaishno Devi pilgrims from Katra to Sanji Chhat remained suspended on Wednesday. However, battery car service from Himkoti to Bhawan plied normally,” said the official.

He informed that by 6 pm on Wednesday, 20,000 pilgrims had registered themselves before embarking upon the pilgrimage.

No disruption was reported on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

Ramban SSP, Mohita Sharma said, “Intermittent shooting stones at Panthiyal slowed down traffic movement but the highway is open.”

Ramaban:  Snowfall in the upper reaches and heavy rains in lower areas have triggered cold conditions in the districts.

In view of heavy rains, all primary and middle schools in Ramban district shall remain closed, they said, adding that students are advised to remain indoors.  

Similarly, all primary and middle schools in the Kishtwar district will remain closed due to bad weather as directed by the district administration.   

However, all high schools and higher secondary schools in the districts will function normally, they added.

Jammu: As many as 15 houses were gutted in a massive blaze that erupted on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday in Kishtwar district of Jammu region, officials said here. 

Officials told Kashmir News Service (KNS), that army and police personnel along with the locals launched an operation to douse the fire. “By the time the blaze was extinguished, 15 residential structures were gutted and 23 families have been affected.

 Deputy Commissioner Kishtiwar Devansh Yadav said relief material for the affected people was being sent. 

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir’s Peoples Democratic Party took to Twitter and wrote, “Pained to hear that 20 residential houses have been gutted in an inferno at Padder, Kishtwar. Rising cases of fires across J&K have been a constant source of concern. Since winter is on the anvil,urge admin to rehabilitate & compensate the victims expeditiously.”

“Very heartwrenching news from Gandhari (paddar) Kishtwar today where fire clutches almost 20 households, requesting the administration led by LG manoj sinha to provide immediate relief & conpensation to the families,” said Dr.Jahanzaib Sirwal, Spokesperson J&K Congress.(KNS)

Jammu: Explosive materials packed in two boxes found in a bag were seized by a police party along railway station Jammu on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

They said that on intimation about the abandoned bag lying near the Taxi stand Jammu Railway Station, a team visited the spot and recovered the bag. “On assessment, eighteen detonators and some wires besides a wax type material, weighing around 500 gm, were packed in the box”, they said.

Meanwhile a senior police official has also confirmed to GNS about the recovery of the bag from the site. (GNS)

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday finalised the names of Rajinder Sharma and Baldev Balouria as candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Jammu Municipal Corporation.

A decision in this regard was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by J&K BJP in-charge Tarun Chugh here at the party office, Trikuta Nagar, Jammu. The meeting was also attended by Member Parliament Jugal Kishore Sharma, former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta, J&K BJP General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul, former Mayor Chander Mohan Gupta, former Deputy Mayor Purnima Sharma, senior party leader Vivodh Gupta among other party leaders.    

Pertinently, the polls for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor would be held through the ballot paper system of polling on October 21 while the nominations would be filed on October 17.

Current position of JMC

Currently, there are 73 corporators in the 75 member Jammu Municipal Corporation as two of them, independent Vijay Choudhary and BJP’s Raj Rani, have passed away. BJP has 44 corporators followed by 14 independents and 13 Congress corporators.

In the last Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections held on November 15, 2018, Chander Mohan Gupta defeated independent candidate Vijay Choudhary. Gupta was polled 45 out of 75 votes. Meanwhile, Purnima Sharma, the former Deputy Mayor defeated Congress’ Charanjeet Kour in the last elections. She was polled 46 votes.

The fresh elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor would be held on October 21 due to the resignation of former Mayor Chander Mohan Gupta and his deputy Purnima Sharma that was accepted on October 11, this year.  

Who is Rajinder Sharma, the Mayor candidate?

Corporator from Ward Number 16, Prem Nagar, Jammu, Rajinder Sharma began his political career in 2002 in BJP as a booth level worker of the party. Gradually, he was made state in-charge of the social justice and empowerment cell of the party, state convenor of the election cell, district vice-president, state in-charge, election related matters; state office secretary and state secretary of the party.

Who is Baldev Balouria, the deputy mayor pick?  

Corporator from Ward Number 56, Gangyal, Jammu, Baldev Balouria began his political journey as an RSS member. In 1991, he was elected as ward president of Gangyal.

Gradually he was elected as president Shopkeepers Association Gangyal, BJP Mandal General Secretary, Gandhi Nagar.

In 2001, he was elected as Sarpanch while in 2006 he was elected as Panchayati Raj president of the party. Between 2015-18, he was elected as District president of BJP while as in 2018, he was elected as Corporator from Ward Number 56, Gangyal, Jammu.

Ramban/Jammu- A 55-year-old man died of burn injuries after a commercial building gutted in a fire in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, officials said on Thursday.

The fire broke out in a building located near a bus stand in Banihal late Wednesday night, trapping a tenant Ghulam Mohammad Tantray, a resident of south Kashmir’s Kokernag, they said.

Tantray suffered critical burn injuries during the rescue operation and was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries on Thursday, they said.

The building, housing several shops and a small restaurant-cum-hotel, was damaged in the fire, the officials said adding the cause of the fire was not known immediately.

The locals alleged that the fire tenders reached the scene over half an hour late as the vehicles were caught in a traffic jam in the town located along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

The fire and emergency services personnel acted swiftly on reaching the scene by restricting the fire to one building before dousing the flames after several hours of intense firefighting operation, the officials added.
