NMC Approves 50 Additional MBBS Seats At GMC Srinagar

GMC Srinagar

Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Uttarakhand, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod to Veer Chandra Garhwali Government Institute of Medical Science and Research, Srinagar to increase its intake capacity of MBBS course by 50 seats.

The NMC permission came following an inspection by the Apex medical education regulatory body in India, which was satisfied with the arrangements made by the college including an increased number of faculties, and other resources, reports.

With this, Srinagar Medical College now has 150 MBBS seats in the academic session of 2021-2022.

VCGS Medical College is the first medical college of Uttarakhand. Back in June, 2008, the erstwhile Medical Council of India had given its nod for 100 MBBS seats.

As per the latest media report, after the implementation of the EWS (Economically Weaker Section) reservation in the year 2019, the college started admitting 125 MBBS students.

Currently, the Base Hospital attached to the medical college has an increased capacity of 700 beds.

When the institute decided to have 150 MBBS seats, it obtained the required permission for the same from the Medical Education University and the Government. Following that, the college had applied before NMC back in December 2020.

After NMC visited the college to check its resources, the apex medical body had instructed the institute to remove its shortage of faculty and other resources. Consequently, back in August 2021, the State Government approved 122 additional posts of faculty at the medical college, which took the total number of faculties at the medical college to 364.

The institute made sure that the objections raised by NMC were resolved. Further, the college administration had appointed faculty on contract as well. After all the shortcomings were resolved, the college had applied for a re-inspection and this time NMC gave its nod for an increase of MBBS seats.

While commenting on the matter, the Principal of the medical college, Prof. CM Rawat informed JKYouth that after conducting the re-inspection, NMC became satisfied with the arrangements and approved the medical college for an increase of 50 MBBS seats.
